The Winchester Mystery House - San Jose

When I was little, I had a book called The Big Book of Amazing Knowledge. One of the interesting bits inside the book talked about a house that was build like a maze. It mentioned staircases leading to nowhere and windows facing blank walls. I found it all so fantastic but then it faded from my memory for many years.

Come adulthood and I've moved to California. During an anniversary celebration with my ex, we decided to go to San Jose and visit a friend of ours, do some shopping, and visit this place my ex had heard about.

Turns out it was the Winchester Mystery House, the place my old book had mentioned. I was beyond ecstatic and eager to see this place.

And that's when my fascination with all things spooky and/or haunted began.

I was not disappointed; the Winchester Mystery House has fascinated me ever since and I've been back a number of times. I'm not the only one who fell under its spell. The guys from Ghost Adventures have gone there a few times as well to investigate the place for ghosts, and so have the TAPS crew from Ghost Hunters.

But is it really haunted?

During one tour I attended, one of the kids asked our guide if he'd ever seen any ghosts. Our guide told him that they're not really allowed to speak of it. On another tour, my best friend and I asked a different guide if she'd ever had any experiences and she said she never had. I haven't had any experiences while there nor have I gotten any spooky feelings, thus maintaining my status as a skeptic.  I'd love to have an experience but I haven't had any luck there yet and I'm in no rush.

If or when the times comes for me to have an experience, I want it to leave me absolutely unable to explain it away. I've witnessed weird things in the past but there was always a shade of doubt that keeps my skepticism alive and well.

I love writing about the places I've seen. With a background in journalism, I hope to warm up my writing muscles and get some good stories in here about fascinating things spooky, eerie or haunted.

Happy hauntings!
